Xbox SmartGlass was a ground-breaking companion experience to the Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles. It shipped on iOS, Android and Windows phones and tablets. The app provided access to Xbox Live features like achievements, messages, activity feed and game progress, also acting as a remote control of the console and featured second screen functionality with selected games and content.

My role on Smartglass was as an Interaction Designer as part of the SmartGlass team. I worked on simultaneous features for several iterations of SmartGlass on all clients for two years. The release of the second version of SmartGlass was designed to coincide with the launch of the Xbox One. It included numerous features available only on Xbox: remote control of media content, companion experiences to main screen content, and an interactive help system paired to titles.

My primary task was to translate Xbox One features into their mobile counterparts on phones and tablets, but in addition I endeavored to create a stronger value proposition on mobile when possible. I advocated for strong value both paired to the console and off-console.

Primary tasks

  • Creating information architecture for all platforms
  • Creating diagrams and wireframes to drive consensus for Dev and PM partners
  • Developing unique feature value by iterating new or expanding on existing features

Critical Reception

Xbox SmartGlass received high ratings on both the iOS and Android stores. iOS stayed between 4.5 and 5 stars continuously. In reviews it was quoted as "the perfect companion for my Xbox, both away from home and i the living room" and "the best remote for Xbox One".
